SWsoft Plesk
September 11, 2007
Okay, my apologies. Today's FamilyFirst pick is on the geeky side.
I've had a website online since 1995. It used to be www.ipa.net/~baldguy, but it vanished long ago.
Nowadays, I manage 22 websites on my own dedicated server. And it's a snap doing so, thanks to Plesk.
You probably never heard of Plesk. It's a VERY nice web-based front end for webmasters that makes managing a server (whether dedicated or virtual) simple. It's intuitive, easy, and very user-friendly.
I've done lots of Linux command-line stuff. You can learn it too, if you have a pocket protector stashed away somewhere.
But Plesk handles all of that for you, so elaborate config file edits are done quickly and easily with a couple of mouse clicks.
Backups are a snap, too, as it will handle setting up cron jobs with automatic archiving. Delete something? No prob, just log into Plesk and restore from a backup!
Hey, I'm proud that I can handle myself at the Linux command line. But I'm not stupid. I let Plesk do most of my work, so I can spend my time writing instead of typing long strings of commands.
