The Annotated American Pie

At presstime, it was 49 years ago today that a Beechcraft Bonnaza crashed near Clear Lake, Iowa, taking the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper.

In 1971, a soulful artists named Don McClean wrote a song which was a long, rambling account about SOMETHING. When uit first came out, the rumors soon followed.

Well, it's been a long time since 1971. And we have a pretty good idea about what McClean was trying to say.

Today's FamilyFirst pick is from FiftiesWeb.com: The Annotated American Pie.

The song is basically a history of rock and roll, from its inception to the year the song was written. And few would argue that the time period that stretched from the appearance of Elvis to the Beatles' breakup was rock and roll's most formative era.

I knew much of the song's interpretation, but I also learned a lot from the site.

Oh, and it's not immutable. The writer, Rich Kulawiec, often states that it's his viewpoint that's being expressed, but he seems dead on, IMHO.

So put a copy of American Pie on the old mp3 player and learn what's going on behind the scene . . .
