The Columbus Navigation Home Page

One school holiday I always looked forward to was Columbus Day. It was used by my teachers to explain how America was discovered, and who it was that discovered it. It took me quite a few years to learn, as Paul Harvey says, the rest of the story. But to a 4th grade student, at the time it seemed very exciting and adventurous.

As we approach the traditional date for that discovery, a visit to a site that is dedicated to Christopher Columbus is in order for the Family Site of the Day. This is a web page that can only be described as everything you want to know about Columbus, and then some. There are very detailed descriptions of all of his voyages to the New World, with emphasis on the first one. An in-depth discussion about just where he first made landfall is included, one of the best debates on that subject I have ever seen. Other topics, such as celestial navigation, ship's longitude (a major problem in those days), and leagues (not NFL or NBA) are included as excellent background information.

The controversy surrounding Columbus is well documented, and open to great debate. This site is one that avoids that debate, and deals with the actual voyages, and the results of them, which is the opening of the New World for exploration and discovery. Political correctness aside, it is a major event that is worthy of our attention on its anniversary.
