The Harry Potter Lexicon

A long awaited event will occur at midnight tonight. One of the most anticipated books ever published will be released at stores all over the world. No matter what time zone you are in, at 12:01am you will have the option of purchasing the latest chapter of the most successful children's book of all time, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince". Today's Family First Site looks at one of the most popular Harry fansites, one that has the latest news about the upcoming book and movie.

The name of the site is The Harry Potter Lexicon. Webster's Dictionary describes lexicon as a book containing an alphabetical arrangement of the words in a language and their definitions. That describes this website perfectly. Here visitors can delve into information about the books, simply by clicking the cover (even the announced but untitled book 7). There are technical details such as publishing dates, number of copies, plot summaries all with detailed hyperlinks to amplifying information. But in addition to the books, there are specific subject areas, such as Magic and Magical Theory, Encyclopedia of Spells, a Wizarding Atlas, family trees of Wizard Folk, and many, many other areas.

The hype surrounding the Half-Blood Prince has shown that there is still magic in the Harry Potter world. When was the last time you saw the national news programs showing videos of books being delivered to a book store? The upcoming movie, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", scheduled to be released in November, 2005, is wrapping up shooting and will undoubtedly create just as much hype and receive just as much press coverage as this book has.

Harry Potter has become an icon and genre in children's books. To many, he has become the Wizard of OZ for the 21st Century. But the books appeal is not limited to just young children. Many adults buy and read the books (present company included), and there will be quite a few at the midnight parties tonight (again, present company included). I guess that just goes to show that there is still a little bit of child in all of us, and Harry just help bring it out.
