The Largest Known Star
December 01, 2007
One quickly gets overwhelmed by the massive size of our universe.
On planet earth, large could be a 1959 Cadillac, if you're used to driving a Toyota Tercel.
But get outside the boundaries of our planet, and size quickly becomes a different concept.
Today's FamilyFirst site is a slide show showing the relative differences in size between our planet and moon and other objects in our solar systems as well as our galaxy. It's called the Largest Known Star.
You are presented with a window inside which the objects pop up and are compared with each other, size-wise. The earth disappears when large stars appear. Then the sun itself disappears as the stars get ever larger. And the most amazing photo of al is at the end, when the sun, a speck almost too small to see, is compared to VY Canis Majoris, the largest star known.
Back to massive numbers: VY Canis Majoris is the largest known star. There may be much larger ones in our galaxy too far away to be measured.
And of course, don't forget that besides our galaxy, there are over 125 billion more.
Wow.
