The Monkees Home Page
January 13, 2007
It was a bizarre idea. Run an ad in the paper seeking four hungry musicians. Pick out four from the applicants, and select them based on their camera-worthiness. Have them perform together on a weekly TV comedy.
What are the odds that such an incredible scenario could ever work?
Pretty long, I'm sure, but they managed to pull it off.
Today's FamilyFirst site is The Monkees Home Page. Their mission can be neatly summed up thusly, in their own words:
Who are The Monkees? How did it all happen? Find out about the 60's pop culture phenomenon that started out as a TV show about a band and became a band without a TV show.
At first, the foursome dubbed vocals over music provided by others. But they were real musicians (well, at least two of them were) and demanded to make their own music.
Eventually, they did record a couple of albums on their own. And the first one was one of the better rock and roll albums ever recorded. That's pretty amazing, considering that two of the group (Dolenz and Jones) were ACTORS, not musicians!
This site is a massive organized collection of links to sites that specialize in Monkee information. Google has made many sites like this unnecessary, but if you are a fan of the group, you'll have a blast looking through the comprehensive library of sites.

If you know anyone who is interested in a Gretsch Monkees 'Rock n Roll' 1967 guitar, one is going to be in the Heritage Music & Entertainment Memorabilia Auction in Dallas this October. Check their Web site in late September!
