The National Do Not Call Registry

I have a real love/hate relationship with my cell phone.

It's a very handy thing to have when I need to get hold of someone quickly. On the other hand, it always scares the dickens out of me when it buzzes. And it seems like, more often than not, it's someone I really don't want to hear from telling me something I don't want to know.

With that in mind, be advised that there are rumors circulating around the internet about the fact that cell phone numbers are about to be released to telemarketers.

This is just an urban legend, friends. Note this quote from the Federal Trade Commission's website:

If you’ve received an e-mail telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database, rest assured that this is not the case. Telemarketing to cell phone numbers has always been illegal in most cases and will continue to be so. In response to recent e-mail campaigns urging consumers to place their cell phone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry, the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commission issue this advisory to give consumers the facts.

However, that does not detract from the value of the National Do Not Call registry! That's why it is today's FamilyFirst pick.

Telemarketers certainly DO call your home phone number. And yes, it's a bother. I'm ashamed to say that I have actually contributed modest amounts to firms purporting to represent various law enforcement charities, and later learned that they were scams.

IMHO, anyone who calls another unsolicited is as principled as an email spammer.

Anyhow, register your phone numbers. You'll receive a decent amount of protection against telemarketers.
