The Plateau - Official Website of Dr. Zahi Hawass
March 02, 2006
Today's FamilyFirst site is about a man you have probably never heard about.
His name is Zahi Awass, and his job title is Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt.
Shades of Indiana Jones! Today's site features mummies, pyramids, obelisks, and all things ancient and Egyptian!
Here's their mission: Welcome to a website where you can learn all about Dr. Hawass, the monuments and antiquities of Egypt including the famous pyramids and Sphinx, information about sites in Egypt, conservation and management of the Giza plateau, the excavation of the the Golden Mummies, and much, much more. Stay tuned and remain current with new information as it arrives directly from Dr. Hawass!
There is a lot of amazing info and also lots of great photos of Egyptian antiquities here. For instance, read about and see a photo of the very recent discovery of Queen Tiye's statue, months before it shows up in National Geographic.
And particularly exciting to me was the account of the robots who crawled through what were always thought to be air shafts in the Great Pyramid of Khufu and found something amazing: a door with two copper handles. They drilled through the door and guess what they found? ANOTHER door! Now, there's growing thought that King Khufu himself might be buried in there, possibly with a wealth of treasure to make King Tut look like a pretender!
But the site is a tribute to Mr. Hawass himself, who oversees all of these antiquities and protects them from exploitation. We could have used him a few thousand years ago when the original tomb robbers were wreaking havoc.
So enjoy our pick today, and hats off to a man doing a great job.
