Tulsa TV Memories
April 02, 2007
Once upon a time, the television was a newfangled, expensive gadget. By the 1950's, most homes in America had TV's, and the prerequisite rooftop antennae, as well.
The televisions were black-and-white, of course. A color TV in the 50's cost as much as a 72" plasma would today.
But television back then had its own flavor. For one thing, it was far from a 24-hour-a-day presentation. No, the broadcast day would end by midnight, with the national anthem, or possibly a reading of the immortal poem High Flight (I'm not sure how that piece of literature ever became connected with signoff, but it certainly did, at least in my area).
That brings us to today's FamilyFirst site: Tulsa TV Memories.
The site pays homage to the local TV shows that used to be on in the 50's through the 70's. Shows that would feature interviews with kids by guys wearing clown garb. Shows like Saturday night lat horror movies, hosted by mad scientists. Shows like noon-time local news, followed by local country musicians playing soothing tunes to lull you into your afternoon nap. Shows like local cooks sharing their top seceret recipes with the rest of the world.
The memories are based in norteast Oklahoma (where I grew up), but I'll bet you can remember shows just like them. If not, ask your parents.
