US Naval Sea Cadets Corps
February 24, 2003
Training our young men and women in the traits of leadership, patriotism, and self-reliance is important if we expect them to become the leaders of tomorrow. Organizations such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Explorers are examples of groups that teach those values. Today's FamSite looks at one that is not as well known, but is just as important.
It is called the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, and this is the online presence of that organization. This corps has, as part of its charter, a mission to encourage and aid young people to develop an interest and skill in basic seamanship and in its naval adaptations, and to implement those skills. There are units located in every state, with information on how youths ages 11 to 17 can join them. Each unit has a website, which explains what their activities are. I visited the website of the one located right here in Portland Oregon, which uses the USS Blueback (SS581) as a centerpiece of their meetings and training. The basic objectives of the program are: (1) to help young Americans become more patriotic and responsible citizens, and (2) to help young Americans understand the role of the maritime services in national defense and in maintaining the economic viability of our nation.
Speaking as a former Naval person, the training that these youth receive helps prepare them for not only a naval career if they choose, but for the responsibilities of becoming productive citizens in our nation. It is an excellent site, and one worth spending some time at. Be sure to pass it on to a friend as well.

i'm not so sure it's in the best interest of families to be promoting organizations that nudge kids toward military careers in the broad guise of "citizenship". when these kids DO choose the military, when the military DOES send them into harm's way, they DIE. dead children in american families doesnt seem like a promotable value to me. how come peace isnt a searchable topic? the military exists to execute war, and war is not "family-friendly."
Evan, the Sea Cadet program is an outstanding volunteer organization for young men and women. This is a free country and fortunately for us, there are those among us willing to serve and if necessary sacrifice to keep it that way! I am proud to have not only been a Sea Cadet in the 1960's, but to have the opportunity to serve them again as an officer! If you are looking for a "peace" organization, then may I suggest the "Peace" Corp as an option for your children? Please don't sully the fine reputation of the Sea Cadet Corp with your silly and erroneous insinuation that we are nothing but a pipeline to war mongering!
While many Cadets do pursue a military career, many others use the experience gained to follow into careers in medicine, merchant marine, NOAA, the Coast Guard and a host of other demanding careers.
The Naval Sea Cadet Corp is obviously not for *some* people, but it remains available for those parents whose children may desire a challenging, physical and educational experience (and have a lot of fun as well).
