Videolan VLC Video Player
June 22, 2007
I've been happily running Ubuntu Linux at home for nearly two months now. It's a good feeling knowing that I have cut my ties to Microsoft. But I realize that that is simply not an option for most of the rest of you computer users, at least not YET.
But you don't have to use what Windows gives you by default for many file formats. There are better freeware and open-source alternatives for many of what Microsoft would have you believe is the only way to open files.
For example, you don't have to use bloated, DRM-laden Windows Media Player. And excellent alternative, with a much smaller footprint on your system resources, is Videolan VLC video player.
This open-source player natively supports a whole slew of file formats with no need to download extra codecs.
It also plays practically every music format out there, as well.
It's very user-friendly, loads in a fraction of time that Windows Media Player demands, and will even give you a slightly warm feeling, knowing that you are one piece of software closer to weaning yourself away from the litigious corporate monster known as Microsoft.
So download your own copy of VLC today, whether you are running Windows, Linux, or Mac OSX. It will run all all of these platforms, and more!
