VMWare, Revisited

One thing's for sure about the world of computers: you have to run to keep up.

There are still systems out there running DOS for simple spreadsheet programs to run businesses. There are also many more Windows 95 and 98 systems still chugging away. Windows 2000 is still a fine O/S, IMHO, and many systems using the seven-year-old operating system can run for months between reboots.

XP, when tweaked for performance, is possibly the penultimate Microsoft offering for computer management.

Vista is so heavily loaded with DRM overhead that I doubt that it will ever be adopted without a significant undercurrent of resentment.

The problem with Vista (actually the biggest one I can think of, it has so many) is that it stresses the hottest hardware at its inception.

A gig of RAM with Vista is like eight megs with 95. It will run, but as slow as a sloth. A large part of the problem is the DRM that infests its inner workings like the Borg. It takes lots of processor and memory power to make sure that you're not stealing movies, music, etc.

Ain't it nice to be trusted.

Anyhow, my system, now a year and a half old, has a dual-core AMD processor and two gigs of RAM. According to Microsoft, it would take additional beefing up before it could run Vista in all its "glory,"

However, with Ubuntu Feisty, VMWare Server, and XP, I run two computers in one.

And I have NEVER exceeded 512 MB of RAM usage since making Linux my base O/S. That includes having many Linux AND Windows apps open at once!

So visit today's FamilyFirst site and consider putting a sleek, fast operating system on your "Vista-ready" computer. Put Windows inside the protective hands of Linux. And give your hardware a break.

Oh, one last thing. Kiss all of that DRM overhead goodbye.
