Wikipedia: Bernie Taupin
October 03, 2008
He was born in a farmhouse in England. He grew up on the farm, and as a child developed a passion for the American Old West.
He enjoyed writing poetry, and if you have never heard of Bernie Taupin, the poet, you have surely heard of the man who has been putting his words to music for forty years.
He's a singer by the name of Elton John.
The Taupin/John team has created some of the greatest tunes ever written and performed.
What would the decade of the 70's have been like without Elton John cranking out one hit after another like Your Song, Honky Cat, Rocket Man, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and dozens more?
Taupin parted ways with John for a little while in the late 70's, but the two began collaborating again in 1980, gradually at first, eventually progressing again to full albums.
Bernie wrote hits for a few others, notably Starship's We Built This City and Heart's These Dreams.
But the duo of Taupin and Elton John will go down in history as one of the greatest songwriting teams ever. Their song Boy in the Red Shoes, from Elton's Songs of the West Coast, may be my all-time favorite that the pair has cranked out.
