Wikipedia: the Virginia Tech Shootings
April 18, 2007
Today's FamilyFirst site is one fraught with recent controversy. The subject is a very recent tragedy. And the fact that the two are combined make a point, which I would like to stress.
The controversial site is Wikipedia. Its premise is outrageous. Anyone with something to say about a subject can post it. The results form a dynamic encyclopedia.
The human race being what it is, and human nature defined similarly, you can see obvious downfalls to such a structure.
Therein lies the controversies. Recent outraged celebrities who have had scandalous accounts published about them in Wikipedia include golfer Fuzzy Zoeller (who is clearly quite able to trash his OWN personality, thank you! Remember the fried chicken remarks about Tiger Woods at the Masters Champions Dinner?) and former journalist John Seigenthaler.
However, witness today's FamilyFirst site: a very informative entry about (presstime) yesterday's tragic Virginia Tech shootings.
This informative article includes photos of the shooting site, aerial views of the area, a biography of the suicidal shooter himself, reactions from all over the world, and the historical context of the horrible event.
IMHO, that's a pretty impressive collection of information about something that happened a little more than 24 hours ago.
So check out the article, and draw your own conclusions about Wikipedia. All I know is that I refer to it daily, albeit with a small grain of salt.
