xtort.net's Freeware Collection
November 24, 2005
Everybody wants money these days, have you noticed?
That's why today's FamilyFirst site is such a refreshing relief. It's a collection of FREE software! Here, let them do the intro:
“The "Complete Freeware Collection" is a collection of hand-chosen, freeware applications which, when combined, make for a complete software package to meet any and all of your day to day software needs. The whole idea of my creating this not so much to create a "best freeware" list, but to illustrate that when you get right down to it, all you really need, is to spring for an operating system. After that, you really do not have to spend one cent on software.”
You know, Microsoft has us believing that we can't operate on a day-to-day basis without their expensive operating systems, office suites, web developing suites, programming suites, etc. etc. Well, as a matter of fact, there are lots of free alternatives that fill virtually every niche that has, up until now, been dominated by Gates and co.
For instance, are you using Outlook or Outlook Express for your email? Well, you are using the single most attacked-by-hackers email reader. Why not give Thunderbird a try? You'll lose none of the functionality, but will gain huge security benefits. The program is, of course, mentioned prominently here.
Software is well organized and described. For instance, you can browse through communication software, graphics software, home & education, internet & network software, multimedia tools, office software, privacy & security, programming tools, and text editors.
In particular, take a look at Floppy Office. If you have a USB stick, you have a small, self-contained office suite that includes a spreadsheet program, a zip utility, an FTP client, a multiple document interface Rich Text editor, a notepad-style editor, secure file shredder, encryption program, full POP email client, web server for hosting files via http, a mini tree-style outliner, vector graphics editor, and a PDF creator. All in a download that's smaller than two megs!
Enjoy today's FamilyFirst site. And here's to freeware!
