Aah, time to mow the lawn.

What many consider to be drudgery is actually a good aerobic workout, assuming you are pushing a mower, and not riding on one! But even if you are running a rider, today's FamilyFirst site has some good advice for mowing the grass and keeping your lawn healthy.

It's called Yardcare.com, and it's brought to you by Toro. What can you learn here? Here are a few things I gleaned:

Cutting your lawn as short as possible may seem like a timesaver, but in truth it could end up creating more problems. Keeping your grass longer allows it to develop a deeper root system, establish better drought protection, and maintain a healthier look. Research your grass-type and its ideal length. As a general rule of thumb, avoid cutting more than 1/3 the height of your grass during each mowing session.

Mowing with a dull, nicked blade is like shaving your face with a butter knife: it can provide painfully poor results. Check your blade throughout the summer so you can get the most effective cut from you lawnmower. Be sure to check your owner’s manual for blade sharpening instructions. If you’re not comfortable sharpening the blade yourself, take it to your local power equipment service center.

Try to change direction each time you mow the lawn. If you mowed vertically last time, try mowing horizontally this time around. This will give you a more even cut and prevent the grass from growing in one certain direction.

Simple maintenance procedures like checking your oil and using fresh gasoline can greatly improve your lawnmower’s performance. Most engine manufacturers recommend getting fresh gas every thirty days.

There's a whole lot more good lawn common sense here. Pop in and see for yourself!
